Chapter 14

TYLER

Hill Air Force Base

Near Ogden, Utah

Tyler rounded yet another corner in the maze of hallways. He was pretty sure that particular one led to the lab where Peta and Devon were sent the night before. At the end of the short passageway, he hesitated a few feet from the entrance. Tyler was torn between using a direct approach with the people he’d come think of as friends, or spying on them instead. He was tired of being brushed aside and stuck in small rooms, and knew from experience how eavesdropping had its benefits.

His mom left him and his dad alone after breakfast, acting like her partial explanation from the night before should be enough to keep them content. Tyler spent a couple hours watching the news on a small tv in their room until his dad fell asleep. He was struggling the most with the time change, and Tyler was happy to take advantage of it to start cruising the halls.

He’d found an exit pretty fast, but an armed soldier turned him away. The guy made some lame excuse of how Tyler had to wait until later, when he could get an escort, since he was a civilian. Tyler knew it was a line of crap and it only solidified his resolve to keep snooping.

After a quick recon, he’d determined that other than breaking out somehow, his initial suspicion that Peta and Devon were the best source for answers was accurate. Well, except for his mom, but he didn’t think she was going to reveal more than what she’d already told them.

Inching forward into the light spilling out from the lab, Tyler froze when he heard his mom’s voice and then he ducked behind the open door. She’d said she was going to some other part of the base all day for meetings, and would be making the arrangements to get him sent to his aunt’s place. What was she doing in the lab?

“Were you feeding Henry information?”

Tyler recognized Peta’s voice. A small thrill coursed through his body when he realized she was grilling his mom for answers. Grinning, he crept closer and eagerly waited to hear her reply.

“It clearly wasn’t enough,” Theresa said with some heat, seemingly undaunted. “I was never aware of all the details early on. I wasn’t important enough…was nothing more than a pawn. Someone else leaked that information about the crevasse and possible eruption to me, knowing I had the ability to sneak it out from Diego Garcia with a supply run to Mauritius. Nothing digital is private,” she added. Tyler risked poking his head out far enough to see that she was directing the last part to Devon. “No one ever got your emails. Not to your family, or your colleagues at the USGS and NOAA.”

“Wait!” Peta blurted, her voice rising. “Why this ridiculous effort to keep us from talking to anyone? Because our government and some heavy-hitting corporate board members don’t want the rest of the world to know they’d been warned
